Preparation is Key
How to Prepare for Your Portrait Photography Session, Everything You Need to Know for a Stress-Free Shoot
Getting professional portraits taken is exciting — whether it's for senior photos, family sessions, or branding images. But it’s also totally normal to feel a little nervous before stepping in front of the camera. That’s why I always tell clients: the better prepared you are, the more relaxed and confident you’ll feel on the day of your shoot.
Here’s a quick guide to help you get the most out of your portrait session.
1. Choose Your Outfits Wisely
Your clothing sets the tone for your portraits. Here are a few tips:
- Keep it simple: Solid colors and minimal patterns photograph best. Avoid large logos or bold graphics unless that’s part of your brand or personality.
- Coordinate, don’t match: For group photos, stick to a cohesive color palette rather than everyone wearing the exact same thing.
- Dress for the setting: If we’re shooting in a natural outdoor space, earth tones and soft textures work great. For a more urban or studio setting, feel free to go bold.
- Bring options: I always recommend bringing 1–2 extra outfits in case we want to switch things up.
2. Take Care of the Details
A few small touches can make a big difference:
- Hair & Makeup: Consider scheduling hair and makeup professionally if it’s important to you. But if you're doing it yourself, go for a slightly polished version of your everyday look. Matte makeup tends to photograph better than high-shine or glitter.
- Grooming: Trim or shape facial hair a day or two before, and take care of things like chipped nails or visible tags on clothing.
- Hydrate & Sleep: You’ll look and feel your best if you’re well rested and hydrated — and your skin will thank you!
3. Bring Personal Touches
Props or accessories can add meaning and personality to your portraits. Some ideas:
- A favorite book, musical instrument, or sports gear
- Graduation cap, letterman jacket, or uniforms
- Pets (just let me know ahead of time!)
These touches help tell your story and make the photos truly yours.
4. Trust the Process
One of the most important things to bring is an open mind and a willingness to have fun.
You don’t need to know how to pose — that’s my job. I’ll give you direction, help you feel at ease, and make sure we get natural, flattering shots. Some of the best moments happen when you’re relaxed and just being yourself.
5. Communicate With Me
If there’s a specific style, pose, or mood you love, don’t be afraid to tell me. I’m here to collaborate and make sure your vision comes to life.
Have a Pinterest board? A favorite photo of yourself? Share it with me before the shoot. And if you’re feeling nervous about anything, let’s talk it through. I want you to walk into your session feeling excited and confident.
Final Thoughts
Portrait photography is more than just snapping pictures — it’s about capturing who you are in this moment. Whether it’s a celebration, a milestone, or just a chance to document your life, I’m honored to help tell your story.
